We wanted to take a moment and share with you the critical principles of landscaping design. There are 5 general themes that are timeless and easy to comprehend. Once understood and applied, their impact will improve any landscape design, and increase your home’s curb appeal. Ultimately, it will help increase the value of your home.

SIMPLICITY IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN

This is a good principal for all areas of your home not just your landscape. If an element or piece does not provide improvement or impact on the design remove it! Prioritize what is important and what is not. This will help keep the design clean, neat and uncluttered.

VARIETY

Shape, size and form selections should be diverse in order to create visual interest, however, do not forfeit simplicity merely to create varied combinations. We often suggest looking at your yard in layers based on height and color. That way, you have visual interest with a simple design.

BALANCE IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Balance is the concept of ensuring the visual weight that everything carries is even throughout the plan. For example, mirroring sides is an easy way to create balance and that balance is critical in the curb appeal of a home.

SCALE / PROPORTION

Scale is the size of the landscape elements and proportion is how they relate to each other. The size of your landscape and the items in it should all be balanced. An example of off balance, would be a wall or tree that is significantly larger than everything, and as a result, it pulls the eye away from the rest of the garden. Finding good scale and proportion is of the utmost importance.

UNITY IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN

Unity is the concept that everything works together. Interconnection can be achieved by using connections such as paths, walkways, stairs and fences to physically link areas.

Repetition of design and natural elements is highly encouraged. By doing so, you assist in unifying the entire property landscape.
